Climate Philanthropy: A New Lever to Engage Businesses in the Ecological Transition

5 June 2025 • NEWS

In the face of the climate emergency, more and more companies are seeking tangible ways to reduce their environmental footprint. However, traditional carbon offset mechanisms are showing their limitations and failing to inspire confidence—due to complexity, lack of transparency, and limited impact. It is in this context that Planète Urgence, a non-profit organisation within Groupe SOS, has developed Climate Philanthropy: a concrete, innovative alternative, designed and validated by a panel of experts—including the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME)—as a transparent, voluntary tool to support climate action. The initiative was officially launched at the ChangeNOW 2025 summit.

This new model is based on a scientifically robust methodology to measure carbon impact, applied to projects such as reforestation, agroforestry, mangrove restoration, and sustainable wood energy production. Unlike carbon credits, Climate Philanthropy is not based on a speculative market but on the direct funding of high-impact projects. It ensures clear traceability, reduces administrative costs, and enables businesses to take meaningful and ethical climate action. Through this model, companies support initiatives that combine climate benefits with biodiversity protection and local development.

Planète Urgence’s commitment to this approach is deeply rooted in its core mission: protecting forests and biodiversity while supporting vulnerable communities. By offering a clear and accessible framework for corporate climate contributions, the NGO aims to address a dual challenge: mobilising sustainable resources to strengthen field actions, and engaging companies in a coherent ecological transition aligned with their CSR strategies and rising societal expectations. Ultimately, Climate Philanthropy is more than just a funding toolit is a bridge between economic stakeholders and practical solutions for preserving natural resources and building a more liveable world.

Forest protection is at the heart of  Planète Urgence’s mission. Since 2000, this international solidarity organisation, part of Groupe SOS, has been active in 8 countries, working to restore ecosystems, raise awareness of environmental issues, and promote the sustainable management of natural resources. Recognised as a public-interest organisation in France, Planète Urgence focuses its efforts on three main pillars: preserving endangered forests and biodiversity, promoting local economic development, and advancing environmental education.

Convinced that everyone can contribute to a fairer and more sustainable world, the organisation has already facilitated the planting of over 20 million trees in some of the planet’s most vulnerable ecosystems, including in Madagascar, Indonesia, and Cameroon.
